KIRKLAND, WA

Sunset Oasis

Above the eastside shores of Lake Washington these homeowners enjoyed the amazing views from their home & decks and requested to expand their enjoyment and use to their large, steep side yard.

The owners wanted to incorporate a spa with a hydraulic cover and an outdoor sauna into the garden spaces. Durable circulation materials and visual transitions between the terraces were key to the success and longevity of this design. The steep slopes with retaining walls required special consideration for drainage, which was routed into the existing storm lines.

Faux stone risers connect the top terrace to the lower spa/sauna patio. The top turf terrace is a space for play activities. The basalt retaining walls support the elevations established by the existing large native evergreens.

Within the rockeries, gardens feature an organized assortment of drought-tolerant, low-maintenance grasses, perennials, and small shrubs. The lower-level walkways connecting the spa and sauna to the home are made of sand-set, high-quality ashlar pavers with a slate texture, providing the necessary traction for wet feet.
